About Us
The Periyar Gaushala Foundation is dedicated to the protection and humane care of indigenous Indian cows (desi cows), particularly the revered Gir cow breed. Our gaushala (cow sanctuary) promotes compassionate cow care following these sacred principles:
Purpose
Dedicated to preserving indigenous Indian cow breeds like the Gir cow, our gaushala ensures their protection and well-being while enriching and promoting these cherished traditional cattle breeds through authentic gau seva (cow service).
Vision
To create a model cow farm and gaushala that provides shelter for 10,000 homeless and non-milking cows, while raising awareness about the importance of respecting these sacred animals throughout their lives.
Mission
Our mission is to protect indigenous desi cows through dedicated gau seva, allowing them to live their full natural lifespan with respect and kindness in our carefully maintained gaushala and dairy farm facilities.
Impact We Want To Create
We're changing society's mindset toward cows, demonstrating they are symbols of abundance and sanctity across all cultures, faiths, and religions. Through our natural cow milk products and education programs, we're revitalizing traditional reverence for these sacred animals.

Developing Cow Sanctuaries

Traditional Gaupalan
Non-Exploitative Relationship With Cows
Unlike commercial dairy cattle operations, we never discard older non-lactating Gaumatas (mother cows) or male calves. We maintain consistent quality and quantity of food and water for each cow, regardless of milk production. Our cow farm follows natural breeding practices without artificial insemination or synthetic hormones.
Ahinsak (Non-Violent) Milking
We practice “dohan,” the ancient Indian tradition where calves freely feed from two teats while the remaining two provide natural A2 milk for human consumption. This ensures both calf and human benefit from the cow’s natural milk.
Ayurvedic Cow Care
Medicinal Ayurvedic herbs enhance our cows’ health and vitality based on seasonal needs. Our sick cows receive treatment primarily through traditional Ayurvedic methods, using modern veterinary medicine only when absolutely necessary.
Organic Cow Nutrition
Our desi cow and Gir cattle herds receive only organic feed grown at our farm, ensuring the highest quality natural cow milk production.
Vedic Rituals and Music for Cow Wellness
Daily Vedic rituals maintain the divine atmosphere of our gaushala. Devotional music and Sanskrit chants create a peaceful environment that keeps our cows happy and healthy.
Sustainable Organic Farming Using Cow Products
We’re demonstrating alternatives to synthetic fertilizers and pesticides through natural farming methods using cow products:
- Probiotic combinations of buttermilk and Gaumutra (cow urine) improve plant immunity and growth
- Gaumaya (cow dung) compost fertilizer enhances farm productivity
- Traditional synergy between cow care (gaupalan) and agriculture creates sustainable farming systems
